BBHC, in partnership with the Department of Children and Families, is leading the implementation of SOAR in Broward County. The Broward SOAR initiative welcomes agencies through BBHC's provider network and the local Continuum of Care to engage in monthly meetings and training for expanding SOAR for people we serve. SOAR is a national program designed to increase access to the disability income benefit programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) for eligible adults who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and have a mental illness, medical impairment, and/or a co-occurring substance use disorder. As part of the Housing Initiative, a dedicated SOAR / Entitlements Coordinator has been hired by BBHC to work with contracted providers and homeless continuum of care agencies to promote use of SOAR to ensure access to housing and employment through entitlements and work incentive supports for persons without income. Through this effort, BBHC is working on building relationships with local Social Security offices and identifying SOAR liaisons.Although the Coordinator's main role is to ensure that funded agencies receive the appropriate technical assistance needed to facilitate SOAR, she recognizes the importance of completing her own SOAR applications in order to identify barriers and determine what is working well. BBHC's current focuses are: the development of a screening tool for SOAR, conducting quarterly meetings and monthly dedicated SOAR case worker meetings, identifying all SOAR case workers across the county and ensuring they are using the OAT system.
